For the love of pets

For animal lover Leony Widjaja, her Dalmatian and two terriers are like her children. She feeds them twice a day, plays with them whenever she has time and changes their clothes once a week. Wait, clothes? On a dog?

"They look cute in a T-shirt, they're my babies. I just love choosing and changing their clothes for the week," Leony said.  Yup, that's how far pet lovers go in taking care of their furry friends. And it doesn't stop there. Just look at the number of pet accessory shops now sprouting all over city malls.

Cute petite cheongsams, small flannel shirts in pastel colors, and even ballerina costumes are hanging in their window displays. No, you've not mistakenly entered a baby shop; this is a pet accessory store.

Petsyle, a shop managed by Woof!, is the new hip place in the pet-loving world. On the other side of the mall, Doggy Dolly sells mostly fashion items for your canine and feline friends.

"Most of these clothes are made in Taiwan. Owners of small dogs love them because they're cute and fashionable," said Emma, Petstyle's shop assistant. Singer Agnes Monica and young actress Julie Estelle are just a few of Emma's regulars.

"Pet accessories have indeed become a new trend. A lot of celebrities often take their pets to public events and more people look after pets as a hobby," store manager Virlia Sandra said.

Surely you've seen Paris Hilton with her Chihuahua peeking out of her tote bag? Want one for yourself? The bag, I mean, not the dog.

Well, just go further back into the shop and you'll find girly Kelly Bags and even a formal style leather bag on the back shelves. These bags sport a side zipper so your petite pet can pop its head out, and are also as fashionable as your regular Louis Vuitton.

But, unlike Paris Hilton, Indonesian celebrities do not opt for these kinds of stylish pet bags.

"It's your regular affluent lady customer that likes this stuff," Emma said, adding that a Korean-made bag for one's barfing or purring friend costs between Rp 1.7 million to Rp 4.5 million.

If one does not have that kind of cash to spare on spoiling one's pet, other accessories at the shop are still quite affordable. The word accessories include jewelry, as in "bling-blings" for your cats and dogs.

How about a pink blingy strawberry-shaped pendant or a choker decorated with sparkling letters that read K-I-T-T-Y?

A couple of years ago, a shop selling pets' needs used to consist of rows of cans of Whiskas, Pedigree or Science Diet. As pet owners have become more affluent, they have been buying more than just food for their loved ones.

This is why perhaps shops like Petstyle and Doggy Dolly are now thriving. Most were opened by pet hobbyists themselves, ones that saw a potential market.

"I personally see clothing for pets as silly. I mean, a dog is a dog and friendship is more important than accessories," Karin Franken of the Jakarta Animal Aid Network said.

"But, it's the owner's choice anyway. They're free to do it if they like, as long as the pet's comfortable with it."

If you're into spoiling your pet with clothes, pretty chokers and stuff, you might find the next premises an option to give Woofie or Kitty a treat. Go check out pet hotels!

Initially pet daycares and grooming centers, places like St. Queena in South Jakarta or Pet Paradise in Central Jakarta have evolved into getaways for pets. And comfortable and reliable places where you can leave your pet for a week or even a month when you're away.

"Last Idul Fitri, all of our rooms were occupied," said Leony, manager of St. Quenna.

On Tuesday, St. Quenna had five "customers", a pit bull and four golden retrievers, whose owners were away on business. Rooms are in fact 3-square-meter cages lining up one after another in an air-conditioned building.

While guests in a hotel only get a free breakfast, this pet hotel serves food twice a day.

Before bathing in the morning, dogs are taken for a swim in a one-meter-deep pool stretching 10 meters. Twice a day, they can play in a vast outdoor playground, crawl under plastic tunnels or jump over colorful wooden hurdles.

Aside from leaving their pets for an extended period of time, animal lovers can also occasionally let their cats and dogs roam around the playground. St Queena charges between Rp 50,000 and Rp 100,000 per day depending on the services.

"The problem with owning a pet in a city like Jakarta is that you rarely have the space to let them *pets* play freely," Leony said.

"We've only been in the business for several months, but given the response, we are thinking of expanding the service."

And those additional services will include a pet-spa where your cats and dogs can have a massage, and a weight-loss program if they've become too plump.

Meanwhile, in Central Jakarta's Pet Paradise, cats and dogs will receive extra grooming for a stay of more than a day. Grooming entails having ears cleaned and ear-hair plucked.

"Pet owners can choose the size of the rooms they want for their pets. We have a small one for Rp 70,000 a night, a medium one for Rp 90,000 and a large one for Rp 110,000," said Reagan Sanda of Pet Paradise.

A large room can fit four golden retrievers, but if you want your pet to have a little more space, you can pay for your pet to have the whole room to itself. Meals are already included and a caregiver will take your pet for a walk once a day and let them play in Pet Paradise's indoor playground.

While pet hotels may seem like a treat, they are still no substitute for a home. But sometimes, having a pet is not an option, especially for those living in houses without backyards or in apartment units.

For the latter, try the currently on offer Lippo Group pet friendly condominiums. Located on ten floors of Kemang Village's Infinity Tower, they are marketed as pet-friendly apartments, with balconies acting as a small patch of greenery where your pet can run around.

So, which treat do you want to give your furry friends? Bling-bling? A pet-friendly apartment? Or just their usual snack?
